ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini: Which AI Assistant Fits Which Job

A job-by-job comparison of ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini built from each vendor's own plan pages: what the free plans include, what $20 a month buys, and which assistant to try first for your work.

There is no single winner between ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, because each vendor puts its effort into different jobs. Choose Claude if your work is long documents, careful writing and code, and you never need generated images. Choose Gemini if you live in Gmail and Google Docs or want image and video generation in the same app. Choose ChatGPT if you want one app that does chat, images, voice with video, data analysis and coding agents, with unlimited everyday text chats on the free plan (subject to abuse limits).

The rest of this guide goes job by job: writing, coding, research with sources, long documents, images, voice, data analysis and privacy controls. Every feature, limit and price below comes from the vendors' own pricing pages and help centers, checked on November 5, 2026. ChatGPT prices are from OpenAI's pricing page on October 23, 2026. We did not run benchmark tasks, so where quality matters, the last section shows how to test all three on your own work in about 20 minutes.

Which assistant fits which job, at a glance

This table lists what each vendor documents for each job, as of November 2026. "Free" means the plan you get with a free account.

Compare the plans and prices (as of November 2026)

The three price ladders look alike at the bottom and split at the top. Prices are in US dollars, before tax, from each vendor's pricing page on November 5, 2026, except the ChatGPT column, which shows the prices on OpenAI's page on October 23, 2026.

Personal plans and monthly prices

Tier ChatGPT Claude Gemini (Google AI plans)
Free $0 $0 $0
Entry Go, $8 in the US No AI Plus, $4.99
Standard Plus, $20 Pro, $20 ($17 billed yearly) AI Pro, $19.99
Heavy use Pro 100, Pro 200, Pro 500 ($100, $200, $500) Max $100, Ultra $200 AI Ultra, $99.99 or $199.99
Teams Business and Enterprise Team from $20 per seat (billed yearly), Enterprise Separate business plans

A few details change the math:

  • ChatGPT Go cost $8 a month on the US pricing page on October 23, 2026. OpenAI bills in US dollars or, in some countries, in local currency, so check the ChatGPT pricing page from your own location. The pricing page notes that the plan "may include ads".
  • Claude Pro is $20 billed monthly or $200 a year. Anthropic's pricing page shows usage limits for every five hours and every week. Ultra, the $200 plan, drops the five-hour limit for verified accounts.
  • Google AI Pro bundles 5 TB of storage, Gemini in Gmail and Docs and, where available, a YouTube Premium Lite plan with the assistant, per the Google AI plans page. If you already pay for Google storage, the assistant may cost you less than it looks.

Which models you actually get

Model names change every few months, so here is what each vendor lists today.

  • ChatGPT: Free and Go get GPT-6 Luna. Plus adds GPT-6 Sol, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra, and Pro gets expanded access to them plus Pro reasoning powered by GPT-6 Astra, per OpenAI's pricing page.
  • Claude: the current family is Haiku 5.5, Sonnet 5.5, Opus 5.5 and Fable 5.1, per Anthropic's models overview. Free gets Sonnet and Haiku; Pro adds Opus. Fable runs on paid usage credits on Pro and can use up to half of the weekly limits on Max.
  • Gemini: Flash-Lite, Flash, Pro and Gemini 4 Argon. Without a plan you get Flash-Lite, and auto selection may route harder prompts to Flash or Pro. Argon needs AI Pro or AI Ultra, per Google's models help page.

Writing and editing: Claude for long drafts, Gemini inside Google Docs

All three write competent first drafts, so the differences are in where the text lives afterwards.

Claude opens longer pieces as Artifacts and documents in Claude Docs, on every plan including Free. You edit the piece next to the chat instead of scrolling through replies. Pro adds Claude for Microsoft 365 and Claude in Chrome.

Gemini has Canvas on the free plan. AI Plus puts Gemini inside Gmail, and AI Pro adds Docs and other Google apps. If your drafts end up in Google Docs anyway, that saves a copy and paste.

ChatGPT keeps context through Projects and memory, both on Free (memory with limits). Its add-ins for Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Google Sheets are limited on Free and Go and fully available from Plus.

Coding: each vendor now ships a coding agent

Chat answers about code are table stakes. The real difference is the agent that edits your files.

  • ChatGPT includes Codex, OpenAI's coding agent. Free and Go get limited access; Plus includes it and Pro extends it.
  • Claude includes Claude Code in every paid plan, starting with Pro. It runs in the terminal, VS Code, JetBrains IDEs, Slack and the web, and it shares one usage pool with your chats.
  • Gemini pairs with Jules, Google's asynchronous coding agent, and Google Antigravity, its agent development platform. AI Pro gives higher Jules limits and entry-level Antigravity limits; AI Ultra raises both. With the 1M-token context on AI Pro, Google says you can load up to 30,000 lines of code into a chat.

If code is your main job, these three are only part of the picture. Our comparison of Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Claude Code and Windsurf covers the editors and plans built for developers.

Research with sources and long documents

For research, the question is how far the assistant goes on its own and how much text it can hold at once.

Research with sources

All three can search the web on their free plans. The multi-step research modes, which read dozens of pages and write a report, are where the plans differ:

  • Gemini includes Deep Research on the free plan. Google's limits page warns that free users may lose it during periods of high demand.
  • ChatGPT offers deep research on Free and Go with limits, and with expanded limits on Plus.
  • Claude has web search on every plan, but its Research mode starts at Pro.

For research that lives or dies on citations, Perplexity is the specialist worth comparing against.

Long documents

The context window decides how much of a contract, report or codebase the assistant reads at once. It is measured in tokens; our explainer on tokens and context windows shows how pages convert to tokens.

Context windows by plan (as of November 2026)

Plan ChatGPT Claude Gemini
Free 27K for Instant Up to 1M, depends on model 32K
Go / AI Plus 54K Instant, 256K reasoning No 128K
About $20 a month 54K Instant, 256K reasoning Up to 1M, depends on model 1M
$100 and up 128K Instant, 400K reasoning Up to 1M, depends on model 1M

OpenAI translates its limits into pages: about 40 pages of text per message with Instant on Plus and about 320 pages with reasoning models. Google says 1M tokens is about 1,500 pages. Anthropic lists "up to 1M, varies by model" for every plan, including Free.

Images, voice and data analysis

These three jobs show the biggest gaps between the assistants.

Images. ChatGPT and Gemini both generate images, with lower limits on their free plans. Gemini uses Nano Banana 2 and adds video generation from AI Plus. Claude does not generate photos or illustrations; Anthropic's help center says it builds diagrams, charts and interactive visuals in HTML and SVG instead, a feature in beta on web and desktop. For pictures, see our list of free Midjourney alternatives.

Voice. All three offer live voice conversations on their free plans: ChatGPT Voice, Claude's voice mode and Gemini Live. ChatGPT adds voice with video from Go, so you can point your camera at something while you talk.

Data analysis. ChatGPT runs Python on uploaded spreadsheets, limited on Free, and adds interactive tables and charts from Plus. Claude creates and edits files with code execution on every plan, and its Dashboards feature is in beta from Pro. Gemini analyzes uploaded spreadsheets and builds charts from them in the web app, per Google's file upload help. For a task-by-task view, see AI tools for data analysis.

Check the privacy controls before you paste anything

All three let you keep personal chats out of model training, but the switches differ:

  • ChatGPT: the pricing page lists a training opt-out on Free, Go, Plus and Pro.
  • Claude: the pricing page lists model training as "Opt-out" on Free, Pro and Max. On Team, content is not used for training by default.
  • Gemini: turn off Keep Activity or use a temporary chat. Google's privacy hub says those chats are kept for 72 hours and are not used to improve its models unless you send feedback. With Keep Activity on, human reviewers read a subset of chats.

Business plans of all three add admin controls and different defaults. Before you paste customer data or contracts, read whether it is safe to put company data into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, which compares retention and training rules plan by plan.

How to choose: test all three on one real task

Feature tables tell you what each assistant can do, not how well it does your work. A 20-minute test on the free plans settles most decisions.

  1. Pick one task you do every week, such as summarizing a report, drafting a client email or fixing a function.
  2. Write the prompt once, with context, audience and format. The AI Prompt Builder assembles it from a few fields.
  3. Paste the same prompt into ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini on their free plans.
  4. Compare the three answers on accuracy, tone and how much editing each needs. Ask one follow-up in each.
  5. Pay for the one that needed the least fixing. Monthly billing lets you switch if a better model ships next quarter.
